Following a design and engagement programme, LLDC submitted an outline planning application in 2018 for the residential part of the Stratford Waterfront site. The residential scheme will sit next to one of three sites for East Bank, the largest culture and education district to be created in a generation.

An illustrative scheme was developed to show how the approved principles could be developed into a detailed design and to provide the Local Planning Authority confidence that a high quality scheme could be delivered in the future (the detailed design was not consented at this stage).

In 2019 an outline planning application was approved that sets the footprint, heights, provision of homes and ground floor uses for the northern part of the Stratford Waterfront site. The images shown are of the ‘illustrative scheme’ and show what the outline planning permission could deliver. The Design Team for Stratford Waterfront have been developing detailed designs and updated designs were shared at the beginning of December 2023.

Working as joint partners, LLDC and Ballymore now want to share the feedback received and how this has moved the designs forward, as part of the preparation of a Reserved Matters application for the residential part of the site, submitted to the Local Planning Authority in March 2024 for their approval.

You can find the full Reserved Matters application here: planning.agileapplications.co.uk/lldc

by typing in the application reference no. 24/00067/REM in the search bar.

UPDATE: Planning granted November 2024

While some aspects of the design are now set, there are other elements that local residents and organisations have had an opportunity to influence as some of the design details are being fine tuned, to ensure the development or plans for Stratford Waterfront truly reflect the unique characteristics of the area. This included hearing the community's thoughts on how certain areas might be used such as such as landscape and open space features, route features and playfulness in the public realm throughout the site that could enhance Stratford Waterfront and their communities through the sites.

Below are the themes we explored and asked for feedback on:

Consider all the ways in which people might move through the space, (walking, wheeling, cycling etc):

  • What makes a good or comfortable route?

  • What makes a safe route?

  • What features and atmosphere make a good public landscape?

  • How can we make the most of relationships between inside spaces and outside spaces?

  • How could we complement other local open spaces?

There will be some play spaces provided for the new residents on their doorstep. We also want to create a child-friendly, ‘playable landscape’ in the new public routes/spaces for everyone to enjoy.

  •  What would make the open spaces playful? (this could be colour, art, natural/interactive elements)

  • What features would encourage playfulness in the landscape?

  • What is missing or needed locally?

  • What should we avoid duplicating?

  • What would encourage you to visit / use the site?

  • How could we make new spaces special?
